Catherine Marshall 

Catherine Marshall began her musical studies at the age of 12, amidst her upbringing in Torrey Hills, San Diego. She attended Canyon Crest Academy, and participated in Certificate of Merit, MTAC Competitions, and All-State/All-Southern groups, studying with Dr. Elena Yarritu. Catherine graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance, studying with internationally acclaimed artist Jill Felber. During her time at UC Santa Barbara, Catherine won First Place in the Music Teachers' National Association California State Woodwind Competition and First Place in the Santa Barbara Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation Competition, receiving a five-thousand-dollar grand prize for her performance of Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. She performed as principal flute of the UCSB Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.​ Catherine has performed in masterclasses with Jill Felber, September Payne, Marianne Gedigian, Claudia Anderson, Denis Bouriakov, and Isabelle Chapuis.

 

Following her undergraduate studies, Catherine was able to complete a year and a half of graduate coursework at Divine Mercy University in Clinical Mental Health counseling, during which she worked as a Behavioral Therapist with children on the Autism Spectrum. While still pursuing her love for performance and teaching, her time in the psychology + helping professional fields has shaped her calling today as an artist. Catherine currently works as a professional flutist and teacher, serving as co-organizer of San Diego Coastal Flutes with her former teacher and mentor Dr. Yarritu. Catherine currently offers private lessons for all levels with a particular interest in beginners. Her studio is located at K & M Music in Sorrento Valley. As a member of the Music Teachers Association of California, she offers the Certificate of Merit program. She will be completing her Master of Music Degree in 2023 at San Diego State University.

 

In addition to her career as a freelance flutist and teacher, Catherine is active in the liturgical music scene within the Catholic Diocese of San Diego. She works as a choir director at St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church, and provides piano and vocal music for many events throughout the Diocese.
